When homeowners start thinking about upgrading their houses, the backyard or yard makeover is one of the last places they invest time and money. Although we spend the majority of our time indoors, ignoring your backyard could cost you a lot of money. It doesn't have to stop with improving your backyard. Even if you don't have a backyard, patio upgrades can make a significant difference. One of the simplest methods to update your patio is to replace your patio furniture. Don't worry, not all yard renovations are pricey. There are numerous inexpensive backyard renovation ideas or backyard landscaping designs that you can implement in your outdoor living area.

Remember, renovating your backyard can increase the amount of money you recoup from other renovations you’ve done inside the home. Likewise, forgetting the backyard space can limit the value that recent renovations have on your home. We understand that not everyone has a large backyard available for renovation. If you have a small backyard, here are some ideas and inspiration to make it appear larger (we've also included some budget-friendly solutions)! If you have a large backyard, several backyard modifications might increase your home's value.

Luxury Backyard Renovation

Backyard Renovation Design Ideas That Give You a Luxury Feel

Outdoor kitchen:

Everyone dreams of having an outdoor kitchen. Having an outdoor kitchen makes it easy to entertain guests. This added luxury has quickly become a sought feature among homebuyers. An outdoor kitchen patio creates a captivating atmosphere that enriches your outdoor experience. If you reside in a location with a long winter season, investing in an outdoor kitchen can be a wise decision. You can use it all year.

Add a Fire Pit:

Adding a fire pit is a simple yet effective addition to any backyard. Fire pits not only provide warmth on cool fall evenings, but they may also serve as hot areas (literally) for entertainment and socializing with friends. Installing a fire pit in your backyard elevates the idea of gathering around the campfire. Fire pits are available in a number of forms and materials, and can be powered by wood or gas. They can transform your outdoor arrangement from excellent to great.

Install a Swimming Pool:

Although a pool is a large expenditure, it may dramatically boost the value of your property. This backyard renovation will completely transform your space, not only because of the pool, but also because of the outdoor furniture, seats, umbrellas, and shade options you choose. Outdoor Makeover and Living Spaces offers top-notch pool installation services in Atlanta and the surrounding area. Outdoor Seating Area:

Make sure you don't forget to incorporate a seating area. Whether for a family gathering or a birthday party, having enough seats in the backyard is essential for creating a comfortable and practical outdoor space. A good patio set will boost appearance when preparing a home for sale. Wicker furniture, cast aluminum, and teak are all excellent material options for patio furniture. Add a glowing fire pit to spice things up!

Fence:

Nothing looks worse than a lovely property with a rickety fence. Your fence is a home safety feature. Consider it a moat and walls around your castle. Improving your home's fencing can give it a more robust and durable appearance.

Add Water Features:

Adding a water element, such as a fountain or pond, brings calm and peace to any outdoor space. This backyard remodel is ideal for increasing the value of your property. Water features come in a wide range of shapes and sizes, from modest fountains to enormous ponds with fish and other aquatic life.

Exterior Paint:

Painting the exterior of your property is similar to giving it a facelift. It's like going to the restroom to touch up your makeup. A fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into your home while also updating its appearance and feel. Painting is one of the most cost-effective options with a positive return on investment.

Plants and Landscaping:

Strategically plant trees, bushes, and vines to provide a lush, natural perimeter for your backyard retreat. Consider a wall of arborvitae or boxwood that filters the afternoon light, a robust pergola decorated with blossoming wisteria or fragrant honeysuckle, or a lovely gazebo surrounded by climbing roses or clematis.

Outdoor Lighting:

Lighting can radically affect the atmosphere in your backyard. Consider string lights, walkway lights, landscaping spotlights, and even lanterns for a comforting glow. Furthermore, outdoor lighting can be integrated with smart home systems, making it easy to manage using voice commands or a smartphone.

Create an Outdoor Living Room.

Adding an outdoor living area is another addition that can increase the value of your property. An outdoor living room is a space intended for relaxation and entertainment, replete with comfy couches, tables, and maybe a fireplace or television. An outdoor living room can be covered or uncovered, depending on your preferences, and it can be tailored to your backyard's distinct design and personality. A screened porch is an excellent method to create an outside living space.

Your backyard is a blank canvas that awaits your particular touch. By incorporating these innovative backyard landscaping design ideas, you can change your outdoor space into a sanctuary that represents your style and personality. When planning your backyard remodel, keep your budget, space, and personal style in mind to create an area that you and your family can enjoy for many years.

In this Blog, we will guide you through the essential steps to clean up and revive an overgrown outdoor area.

Here Are The Best Ways To Clear An Overgrown Landscape:

  1. Remove debris:

Before you begin renewing your backyard, sweep away any debris. Remove fallen branches, dead leaves, and any rubbish that has gathered. This step is critical because it gives you a clean slate to work with, allowing you to see the full scope of the overgrowth and identify any potential threats.

Landscaping Debris Removal

  1. Rake it all away:

Now that your space is garbage-free, it's time to address the overgrown vegetation. Invest in dependable string trimmer and pruning shears to remove tall grass, weeds, and overgrown plants. When cutting near important plants, use caution and avoid damaging any structures or hardscape features. After trimming the plants, pick up any clippings or dead plant materials. Raking cleans your yard and allows more ventilation and sunlight to reach your plants, resulting in healthier development.

  1. Prune and trim:

Overgrown plants can make your yard appear disorganized and unsightly. Pruning is critical for keeping plants healthy and improving the overall beauty of your landscape. Remove dead or damaged branches, shape shrubs, and trees to promote healthy development, and prune excess growth to reduce crowding and create a more orderly appearance.

Pruning & Trimming

  1. Weed control:

Weeds may quickly take over a neglected landscape, leaving it unsightly and unkempt. Implement a weed control approach that manually removes weeds and ensures you get the roots. Mulching is also helpful in suppressing weed growth, and you can use organic or chemical weed control methods as needed to handle persistent weeds.

  1. Improve soil health:

Healthy soil is essential for plant growth; therefore, it must be tested to assess its pH and nutrient content. Based on the findings, amend the soil with compost or organic matter to improve soil structure and fertility. Maintain good drainage to avoid waterlogging, which can damage plant roots. Watch this USDA video to learn more about the value of soil health.

Drainage System

  1. Manage pests and diseases:

Pests and diseases can devastate your plants, so be watchful and take action to safeguard your landscape. Inspect plants regularly for symptoms of pests and disease and apply organic or chemical treatments to control infestations. Encourage beneficial insects that attack dangerous pests to help keep your garden healthy.

  1. Sharpen the edges:

Sharp, well-defined margins give your yard and lawn a neat, polished appearance. Create clean boundaries between your garden beds and lawn with a spade or edging tool. This easy action can significantly improve the appearance of your backyard landscaping design.

  1. Include wildlife-friendly features:

Encourage biodiversity by developing a wildlife-friendly backyard. Set up bird feeders and birdhouses to attract a range of birds. Consider planting native flowers and bushes to attract pollinators such as bees and butterflies. Provide shelter and water supplies, such as a small pond or birdbath, to help native animals thrive.

A thriving ecosystem in your backyard benefits nature and improves the aesthetics of your landscape. These wildlife-friendly features enhance your Atlanta landscape design by creating a harmonious atmosphere and adding charm.

Regular Maintenance and Seasonal Care

Maintaining the beauty and functioning of your renovated garden is a continuous activity that guarantees long-term success. Here are some essential tips to help you keep your outdoor space in great condition:

  1. Maintenance schedule:

Create a routine maintenance regimen to maintain your backyard in peak condition. Regular tasks include mowing lawns, trimming bushes, and weeding flower beds. Check your irrigation system for leaks and malfunctions, and monitor the condition of your hardscape elements.

  1. Seasonal activities:

Backyard maintenance activities vary depending on the season.

  • Spring: Start the season with a thorough clean-up. Prune overgrown plants, remove winter debris, and prepare your garden beds for planting. This is also the time to check your irrigation system and ensure it is ready for the growing season.
  • Summer: Concentrate on grass care by mowing frequently and watering as needed. Watch for indicators of pests or diseases and take action as soon as possible. To maintain moisture, add mulch to your garden beds.
  • Fall: Continue to clean up fallen leaves and withered flowers. This is the best time to plant new shrubs and perennials. Consider aerating your lawn to prepare for winter.
  • Winter: Prepare your yard for the cold season by winterizing your irrigation system, sheltering delicate plants, and protecting hardscape features from frost.

1. Sustainable Landscaping

Sustainability continues to be a top trend in outdoor design. Homeowners are increasingly opting for eco-friendly landscaping solutions, including drought-tolerant plants, permeable pavers, and rainwater harvesting systems. These sustainable practices not only reduce environmental impact but also lower maintenance costs and water consumption.

2. Multi-Functional Outdoor Spaces

Today’s homeowners want outdoor spaces that serve multiple purposes. Whether it's a backyard that transitions from a daytime family hangout to a cozy nighttime entertainment area, or an outdoor kitchen that doubles as a social hub, versatility is key. Consider adding features like retractable pergolas, outdoor firepits, and adaptable seating arrangements.

3. Smart Technology Integration

The integration of smart technology is transforming outdoor living. Automated lighting, irrigation systems, and outdoor sound systems allow homeowners to create personalized experiences with just the touch of a button. As you search for landscaping design near me, consider adding smart features to make your outdoor space more functional and modern.

4. Native and Low-Maintenance Plants

Low-maintenance, native plants are not only beautiful but also practical for homeowners who want a lush landscape without constant upkeep. Native plants are adapted to the local climate, making them resilient and less dependent on fertilizers or excessive watering.

5. Outdoor Wellness Areas

Wellness is becoming a major focus in outdoor design. From meditation gardens to yoga decks, more people are incorporating wellness elements into their backyards. Water features like fountains or small ponds, as well as secluded, quiet spaces, can enhance mental well-being while offering a peaceful retreat in your own backyard.

6. Bold Outdoor Colors and Materials

For homeowners looking to make a statement, bold, contrasting colors and innovative materials are on the rise in 2024. From vibrant outdoor furniture to accent walls in deep hues like navy and charcoal, adding a pop of color can bring personality and energy to your backyard. Consider natural materials like wood, stone, and concrete for hardscaping elements to balance modern aesthetics with a timeless look.

Low-Maintenance Landscaping Ideas:

Choose native plants:

Native plants that grow naturally in the Atlanta area are ideal for your low-maintenance landscape. Native plants have already adapted to local soils, precipitation, and pests, so they will require little aid from you once established. Look for native Georgia plants flourishing in Atlanta's USDA hardiness zone 7b to 8a.

Some Native Plants to Consider:

  • Native trees: Do you want a huge tree that your family may enjoy for years? You might try native trees like red maple, river birch, or sugarberry.
  • Native flowers: It includes black bugbane, fringed blue star, and partridge pea, would provide interest and color to a flower garden or planting bed.
  • Native shrubs: You could create a hedge with native shrubs such as fetterbush, winterberry, or southern wax myrtle.

Design A Water-Wise Xeriscape:

"Xeriscape" is a large intimidating word that simply refers to a drought-tolerant landscape that uses little water. Even though Atlanta is not in a drought, xeriscaping can help you save water. You will save money on your monthly water costs while also saving an essential natural resource.

Your xeriscape can take on almost any appearance you like. All xeriscapes will use drought-tolerant native plants, mulch, gravel, and hardscapes. However, you are free to express your creativity in layouts and color schemes.

Once you've created and executed your xeriscape, you won't have to do much else to maintain it. It will only require water on rare occasions (or never if it rains heavily).

Water-Wise Xeriscape

Add Hardscape Elements:

What requires less maintenance than native plants or a xeriscaped yard? Hardscapes! A hardscape is any aspect of your landscape that is not alive and growing. This comprises outdoor living areas, fences, paths, retaining walls, and water features.

Because hardscapes are not alive, you do not need to care for them except for periodic cleaning.

If you have a location in your yard that appears to lack something, try building a hardscape rather than new plants. A well-placed hardscape can improve your home's curb appeal and increase its value.

You may also add a new function to your yard by installing elements such as patios and outdoor kitchens.

Mulch Multch Multch:

Adding mulch to your plant beds will improve their health and make them easier to maintain. Mulch suppresses weeds and helps plant roots retain moisture during the summer heat. That means you will no longer have to spend time on your knees in the earth removing weeds. It also means you won't have to water the beds as often as you did previously.

Mulch can be formed from a variety of biological and inorganic elements. Wood chips, shredded bark, and pine straw are some of the most commonly used organic mulches. Inorganic mulch, such as rubber mulch, gravel, and pebbles, lasts longer than organic mulch since it does not degrade in the soil.

Organic Mulching

Fall Landscaping Ideas To Keep Your Outdoor Lush And Healthy https://outdoormakeover.net/fall-landscaping-ideas-for-healthy-outdoor-areas/ Wed, 18 Sep 2024 06:20:00 +0000 https://outdoormakeover.net/?p=72030 upscale landscaping ideas

Just because the summer sun isn't as bright in the fall doesn't mean your outside space has to follow suit! There are numerous methods to make your garden shine with color and intrigue as the seasons change. Upscale landscaping ideas or classic outdoor fall decorations such as pumpkins, mums, and hay bales are a good place to start, but why not take it a step further by doing modern landscaping projects and incorporating fall flowers?

It may appear contradictory, but working on your garden and landscaping throughout the fall makes a lot of sense. Not only does this transitional period provide an excellent opportunity to ease into the new season, but it also allows you to prepare your yard for the winter months ahead. Growing fall veggies and evergreens, tidying up your yard, and decorating your outdoor space will result in long-lasting changes to your garden that you may enjoy for seasons—and even years—to come.

Still trying to figure out where to start? Let our fall landscaping ideas inspire you.

Outdoor Fall Landscaping Ideas

Clear Out Your Yard:

It's a fantastic idea to undertake yard maintenance and tidying during the final weeks of summer. Here are some ideas for preparing a ship-shape autumnal yard for the upcoming cold months and, finally, the return of spring:

  • Address any straggling weeds.
  • When annuals are past their peak, remove them.
  • Get rid of thatch, which is the accumulation of debris, dead grass, and roots between the surface of the soil and the grass.
  • Address the bald areas in your yard by overseeding and applying lawn fertilizer.

Plant shrubs and trees:

Unexpectedly, planting evergreen and decorative trees in your yard is best done in the fall! Before the summer heat sets in, October's temperature and soil conditions can help trees build a robust root system. Boxwood, spruce, and pine trees are good choices if you're searching for evergreens. On the other hand, plant dogwood, redbud, Japanese, or sugar maple trees to bring gorgeous fall colors into your yard.

Grow Fall Vegetables:

Your bounty of homegrown veggies doesn't have to end just because summer has! In late August or September, you may plant many fall vegetables that grow quickly. Young harvesting is possible for most greens, including spinach, kale, Swiss chard, and root crops. These will also give your room a ton of color and texture.

Cut Off Dead Limbs:

Weak or dead branches may break due to winter winds, possibly injuring people or damaging your property. You can hire tree removal experts for large-scale tasks. Smaller pruning jobs on ornamental trees, however, are something you can do yourself. Taking preventative measures shields your trees from future harm and encourages stronger development in the spring.

To keep your Atlanta, GA, landscape design looking healthy overall and to prevent accidents, regularly check your trees for weak or dead limbs. Cut limbs that are loose, broken, or unhealthy near the trunk but not quite flush with it. Allow the wounds from pruning to heal naturally.

Add An Outdoor Fireplace Or Firepit To Add Warmth:

Autumnal evenings are ideal for gathering around a warm fire, enjoying cider, and exchanging tales. Putting in an outdoor fireplace or firepit in your yard invites friends and family to gather and enjoy the charm of the season while also adding warmth.

Outdoor Fire pit ideas

Consider using container plants:

Potted plants are not only lovely accents to any outdoor space but can also be moved inside (referred to as "overwintering") if the weather becomes too cold for them to stay outside.

For fall container arrangements, combine hardy succulents like echeveria with pansies and violas. The succulents can then be potted and placed indoors for a wonderful display to enjoy throughout the winter.

Outdoor potted plants

Incorporate Decorative Accents:

A straightforward obelisk or trellis can serve as a garden focal point even well beyond the first frost. To make your winter garden visually appealing, put it somewhere that can be seen from the inside.

Bonus: For the holidays, add lights to it!

Fall Lawn Care Checklist for Atlanta Homeowners

Overseeding and Aeration of Fescue

Aerating and overseeding cool-season grasses, such as tall fescue, is best done in the fall when they are just beginning their growing season. In Georgia, October is typically the ideal month for overseeding because the soil is sufficiently chilly to encourage the best growth for your newly installed grass. Atlanta's long, steamy summers may be taxing on fescue lawns. For this reason, the easiest strategy to renew an Atlanta fescue lawn is to seed it every fall. Core aeration helps release compaction, break up thatch, and prepare the soil for optimal seed-to-soil contact before planting. For optimal results, irrigate your newly planted seed frequently throughout the first few weeks after planting.

Lawn care Atlanta

Fall Weed Control for Warm-Season Grass

Warm-season grasses in Atlanta often prepare for winter dormancy in the early fall. And, while Bermuda and Zoysia lawns rest for the winter, troublesome weeds do not! Preventative weed treatment is recommended in the fall to help decrease the number of weeds in winter. Pre-emergent herbicides are designed to prevent weed germination in soil and should be sprayed throughout the year. This is the key to effective weed management for Atlanta lawns: prevent weeds from sprouting! When spring arrives next year, you'll be glad you didn't miss fall and winter pre-emergents on your grass.

Raking Leaves and Yard Clean-up

Raking leaves is less enjoyable as an adult than a child. But it's an important fall lawn care task. Color-changing leaves are a lovely aspect of autumn, but they may be a nuisance on your lawn. Too many leaves on your lawn can suffocate the turf and prevent essential elements such as water, air, sunlight, and fertilizer from reaching the soil. A small coating of leaves is not a cause for concern, but heavy leaf coverage can harm healthy grass. Leaves can be bagged and removed or used as mulch in other areas of your yard.

Fall Fertilization for Atlanta Lawns

Applying lawn fertilizer throughout the summer is a no-brainer for any DIY lawn care enthusiast. But fall fertilization should not be neglected. After hot, stressful Atlanta summers, lawns require essential nutrients to replace carbohydrates in the plant before winter. Fertilizers contain potassium and phosphorus, which help boost winter hardiness, promote better grassroots, and prepare the lawn for the following spring. Furthermore, fall and winter are ideal times for soil testing to identify nutrient deficiencies.

On the other hand, plant dogwood, redbud, Japanese, or sugar maple trees to bring gorgeous fall colors into your yard. decorative trees in backyard

Taking preventative measures shields your trees from future harm and encourages stronger development in the spring. tree removal experts Atlanta To keep your Atlanta, GA, landscape design looking healthy overall and to prevent accidents, regularly check your trees for weak or dead limbs.

Fall Landscaping Atlanta

Screened-in Porch Benefits for Outdoor Living Experience https://outdoormakeover.net/screened-in-porch-benefits-for-outdoor-living-experience/ Fri, 19 Aug 2022 08:12:00 +0000 https://outdoormakeover.net/?p=50789 Outdoor Makeover: Screened-in Porch Benefits for Outdoor Living Experience

As longtime Georgia residents and the leading landscape architects in Atlanta, we know that having a deck or patio is a great addition to any home. However, when the weather is hot- as Georgia summers can be - it is nice to have a place where you can enjoy the outdoors without being completely in the line of the sunlight. This is where a screened-in porch comes in.

While a patio or deck is a great addition to any home, there is just something g special about a screened-in porch. It offers several benefits making it a great way to add living space to your home.

Benefits of Having a Screened-In Porch

Protection from the Sun

We all know how hot a Georgia summer can get! And while being in the sun might appeal to some, being able to enjoy the day while blocking the intensity of the sun’s rays is a wonderful option. In the Atlanta area, many homeowners opt to have a ceiling fan installed as part of the makeover, so you have some airflow while minimizing the intensity of the heat. The screened-in porch also means you can relax ‘outside’ without concern of getting sunburned.

Extra Room

Sometimes you just need a little extra space for family and friends. A screened-in porch is like having an extra living room, office space, dining room, or game room- or whatever type of space you want it to be. While the screened-in aspect will already give a certain amount of privacy, one could also add decorative screens to block off a portion of the porch to be an ‘outdoor’ bedroom, or perhaps set up exercise gear for a home gym. Other homeowners choose to use the space as a reading nook, a craft area, a mini kitchen, or a place for gaming and entertainment. The best part? Whatever your plans are, the Outdoor Makeover team can create it.

Added Value

A screened-in porch is not included in the square footage of a home, but it does add to the value.  According to Home Advisor, a screened-in porch has a nationwide average ROI of 75%. This number is higher in states where hot summer weather is common; in Georgia, the ROI on a screened porch is 84%.

Protection against Bugs

For those prone to mosquito bites, or want to be able to enjoy the outdoors without fear of bee stings, this is the answer! The tight ‘weave’ of the screen, keeps bugs out while allowing summer breezes to pass through. No more porch picnics shared with the bugs! Just relaxing in comfort.

Screened-in Porch offers Protection from the Weather

While a screened-in porch doesn’t have insulation on all 4 sides, it does offer covering. And, if you have awnings included as part of the design, there is some extra shade, as well. Sit outside when it’s raining without getting wet, or enjoy a breezy fall day without dodging leaves- the choices are endless!

Added Architectural Design

Many homes are pretty basic- they have siding or brick exterior all the way around. Adding a screened-in porch changes the exterior of a home by adding depth and a focal point to the structure.

The Privacy

A screened-in porch offers you the ability to see beyond your porch, while those passing by cannot easily see in. Passerbys may see something/someone on the porch but they will need to get much closer to truly see. Because many are at the side or back of a home, landscape features can provide additional privacy.

Get in touch with Nature

Do you live in an area where seeing birds, rabbits, deer, or other wildlife is common? Having a screened-in porch allows you the perfect spot to observe nature without disturbing the wildlife.

These are just some of the benefits of a screened-in porch. From creating a quiet meditation nook to an extra entertainment space, this space will quickly become everyone’s favorite spot to be!

Having a screened-in porch is a definite boon to any home in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Talk to the best backyard landscape designers in Marietta and East Cobb today.

Do you want a yard that makes you sigh in delight and not distress? If so, Outdoor Makeover & Living Spaces would love to work with you to help create a landscape that meets your needs, as well as your wants. As Atlanta landscape designers with years of experience, we know there are some key elements to be included for the project to be a true success. These components of landscape design all work together to create a peaceful and harmonious landscape that makes you smile every time you walk into your yard.

No matter the type of design work you are considering, there is one thing that they all have in common: understanding the space with which you are working.  Whether it be a floorplan for your new home, a room makeover or an upgrade to your landscape, having a design plan is essential for a successful result. In order to create the plan, there are an assortment of landscape design components that need to be considered. For those who have never embarked on the excitement of landscape design makeovers, it can be a bit overwhelming. After all, just because your yard is the equivalent of a blank canvas, it doesn’t necessarily mean you are ready to start adding color. Before going to the nursery and selecting a plethora of plants and yard décor, it is important to have a well-crafted plan with the following components of landscape design.

Creating A Landscape Design Plan

So, now that you have decided to upgrade your current front yard or backyard landscape, you may be wondering what landscape design elements should be included. Fortunately, you don’t have to have all the answers, as that is where the Outdoor Makeover & Living Spaces team shines. Our landscape renovation and design experts will listen to your front or backyard design ideas and then create a landscape renovation plan that incorporates each component below so you can enjoy your outdoor living space more than ever before.

Lines - For a landscape design to be soothing to the eyes, it needs to have lines connecting various focal points of your yard. It might be a gazebo, a water feature, a large flowerbed or any other element, but having a focal point helps set the theme. Lines are often subtly incorporated to draw the eyes from each feature of your yard. Vertical lines draw one’s eyes upward, while horizontal ones are great for bringing attention to small alcoves, garden areas, or paths or other focal points. In addition, keep in mind that curved lines tend to be more natural and calming while straight lines are more formal and direct.

Mass - This is the space or area occupied by the elements of your landscape – whether those include a gazebo, flowerbeds, the plants within a flowerbed, a swing set or any other features in your yard, these items add to the mass of your landscape. And, while each component has its place, it is important that things are balanced proportionately else it will make the yard seem cluttered or cramped.

Balance – Endeavor to keep the size of garden areas, shrubbery, trees and outdoor structures in proportion to the house and space you are working with. A good rule of thumb is that the height of an element (be it shrubbery, a fence, or a fountain) should be 1/3 the height of the width of a space – so a patio area that is 24 square feet is best paired with a vertical element that is 8 feet tall. Choose plants and design elements that suit the style of your home. It helps to determine the theme or feel of the finished product, then work to have the design be aesthetically and functionally placed.

Form - Everything in your lawn has a shape – from the walkways and driveway to garden areas and seating areas. They may be squares, triangles, circles or irregular shapes, but each of these shapes lend to the form of your landscape. Typically, rectangle forms are formal, circles are soft, triangle are strong and irregular shapes are seen as carefree. Since you will want your landscape design to express a certain personality, be sure you let our team know what message you want your lawn to reflect.

Color - The best way to add life and energy to your landscape design is through color. Whether it is through pavers for a patio, a stone retaining wall, the flowers chosen, or decorative fountains, color helps unite your landscape, while making it even more inviting to you and those who visit.

Texture - Nature is full of textures, so why not use them to make your landscape design shine? From the type of grass chosen, to whether you opt for a winding gravel path or pavers, choosing trees with smooth bark or those with a rough bark, there are many ways to incorporate texture. Having a good variety will make you landscape more appealing to the senses. Don’t be afraid to incorporate a wide range of plant types in the same space. It is totally acceptable to combine a variety of hostas with decorative grasses. Also, don’t forget to plant from big to small. Start by deciding on trees, water features, statuary, or any other structures to set the stage.

Lighting - Just as color is important to your yard, so are outdoor lights. The addition of spotlights, path lights, twinkling white lights and other illuminating elements will take a basic landscape design to the next level. Better yet, when lights are placed properly, they also help add security to your yard, while still making it an inviting place to hang out with friends. There is a wide variety of lighting choices that can be used to set the atmosphere of your landscape, but also try to take advantage of natural lighting. For instance, planting trees and shrubs along an east-west line will often create a beautiful display at sunset/sunrise.

Simplicity – A busy landscape with numerous features is not only difficult to keep maintained, but it can be difficult to focus on or be able to relax in. By keeping the landscape design simple, it is easier to find pleasure and relaxation when enjoying your outdoor living space.

While each component of landscape design is important, creating a cohesive plan for your yard requires landscape design experts incorporating each element above. If you want to incorporate these components of landscape design into your home’s landscape, then don’t wait till spring to get started. Contact Outdoor Makeover & Living Spaces to schedule a landscape design consultation and you can have a new yard before summer even gets here!

Xeriscaping is the practice of using plants that are often indigenous to (but not excluding others) an area and then arranging them in an efficient manner so as to use a minimal amount of water. It was first introduced in Denver, CO in the late ‘70s and has since become popular all across the country. And while it is sometimes mispronounced “zero-scaping” – instead of “zeer-i-scape”, it does not mean that the final result of a xeriscape is without color or design. If you are contemplating a xeriscape lawn design, then there are some key principles to keep in mind.

Principles of Xeriscaping

Although the initial reason for xeriscaping was to help communities conserve water, it continued to evolve until the following seven principles were developed.

Planning and Design

Regardless of the area to be xeriscaped, it is important to begin with sketching out the plan.  Typically, 2 sets of plans will be crafted. The first one is a drawing of how your landscape is currently situated. It will include your home’s location and any additional structures or permanent elements. The second sketch is a bubble diagram that is laid over the first sketch. Then notes regarding design elements, specific plants to be added or, if necessary, removed or any other aspects will be made. The bubble sketch is then used to create the final design.

Turf Areas

Traditional lawns can require excessive water to maintain a healthy, welcoming appearance. Rather, a xeriscaped yard considers where grass is more useful versus where it is less necessary. In addition, grasses that require less water may be implemented.

Plant Selection

Perhaps the most important part of the process is choosing the plants. As much as possible, local plants should be selected as they will require less maintenance. Once local plants are selected, then plants from beyond the region may be chosen. But it is more than just the plant selection. It is also important that they are planted where they can best thrive while maximizing amount of sunshine available and minimizing the amount of water needed.

Soil Improvement

When it comes to xeriscaping, the best type of soil is silt as it helps keep the plants cool, helps retain water and minimizes evaporation. It might be necessary to improve the soil in your landscape to implement xeriscaping.

Watering

While xeriscaping aims for less water, some maintenance will still be necessary. The variety of plants chosen will affect the amount of water needed. Talk to the Outdoor Makeover & Construction team to learn how to care for your xeriscaped lawn.

Mulch

There are two types of mulch. Organic which is wood-based and inorganic which is stone based like cobblestone or lava rock. With organic mulch you will need to replace it periodically, while inorganic will not. However, it is important that the rock elements are used in places where there is less sun so that they don’t reflect heat into the garden.  Xeriscaping has been around for several decades and will likely continue to be used. If you are looking for a way to have a great looking lawn with minimal work, contact Outdoor Makeover & Living Spaces today.

Pavers or Stone: A Tough Decision https://outdoormakeover.net/pavers-or-stone-a-tough-decision/ https://outdoormakeover.net/pavers-or-stone-a-tough-decision/#respond Mon, 20 Jan 2020 12:09:00 +0000 https://outdoormakeover.net/pavers-or-stone-a-tough-decision-2/ Outdoor Makeover : Pavers or Stone: A Tough Decision

When you start dreaming about a new landscape design, chances are you gave a great deal of consideration to the features you wanted to see. Those aspects might include the seating area, whether or not to have a fire feature, and of course, some type of ‘flooring’ to pull it all together. But when it comes to that ‘flooring” it can be tough to decide whether to opt for pavers or stone. Each of these options – pavers or stone- are both beautiful and known for their longevity. So, you might be asking if one material is better than the other?

Pavers or Stone? That is the Question

Pavers:

  • Pros: Typically made from concrete and of a rectangular or square shape, pavers come in a wide range of colors. This means you can create a custom look utilizing a variety of shades. They can be easily customized to suit your specific design needs and can be installed in virtually any pattern. In terms of maintenance and longevity, they can withstand extreme heat as well significant cold. They do require being cleaned off with a pressure sprayer from periodically. In addition, should they be damaged, they can be replaced simply by removing the damaged section and placing in new ones.
  • Cons: Pavers – especially concrete ones- can often be more pricey than other types as it requires more grading and backfilling. They can also crack, though this is rare, due to settling or shifting of the soil.

Stones:

  • Pros: Perhaps the favorite feature of stone landscaping is that it is natural, thus adding a unique and timeless look to any structure in which it is used. They are strong and will retain the natural variations of color and texture. Better yet, they do not require any serious maintenance work, other than occasionally sweeping. In the event one is damaged, they can be replaced, though it can a bit more to find a replacement stone.
  • Cons: Keep in mind that because it is natural, your stone flooring will change in color. In addition, some stones are more inclined to retain heat, so would not be recommended for use around a pool. For the budget conscious, stones can also be a larger investment – but with an equally high ROI- than pavers. Both options are a great way to add more dimension to your outdoor makeover or new landscape design. It really just comes down to what you wish to invest in and the overall look you want to achieve for your yard. If you are uncertain as to whether to choose pavers or stone, talk to one of the Outdoor Makeover & Construction team members. We will be happy to help you make a decision that meets all your needs.

No matter the type of design work you are considering, there is one thing that they all have in common: The need to plan and understand the space with which you are working.  Whether it be a floorplan for your new home, a room makeover or an upgrade to your landscape, having a plan is essential to having a successful result. But, in order to create the plan, there are an assortment of factors that need to be considered. For those who have never embarked on the excitement of landscape design, then it can be a bit overwhelming. After all, just because your yard is the equivalent of a blank canvas, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are ready to start adding color. So, before going to the nursery and selecting a plethora of plants and yard décor, it is important to have a well-crafted plan.

7 Tips for Determining Landscape Design Elements

  1. Lines:  Understand how you can use the alignment of the plants to draw the eye where you want it to go. Vertical lines draw one’s eyes upward, while horizontal ones are great for bringing attention to small alcoves, garden areas, or paths or other focal points. In addition, keep in mind that curved lines tend to be more natural and calming while straight lines are more formal and direct.
  2.  Balance: Endeavor to keep the size of garden areas, shrubbery, trees and outdoor structures in proportion to the house and space you are working with. A good rule of thumb is that the height of an element (be it shrubbery, a fence, or a fountain) should be 1/3 the height of the width of a space – so a patio area that is 24 ft2 is best paired with vertical element that is 8 feet tall.
  3. Lighting:  There is a wide variety of lighting choices that can be used to set the atmosphere of your landscape, but also try to take advantage of natural lighting. For instance, planting trees and shrubs along an east-west line will often create a beautiful display at sunset/sunrise.
  4. Mix it up:  Don’t be afraid to incorporate a wide range of plant types in the same space. It is totally acceptable to combine varieties of hostas with decorative grasses. Also, plant from big to small. Start by determining trees, any water features, statuary or structures to set the stage.  Need help? Our Outdoor Makeover team is happy to help you determine what types of plants will work best in your landscape design.
  5. Harmony: Choose plants and design elements that suit the style of your home. It helps to determine the theme or feel of the finished product, then work to have the design be aesthetically and functionally placed.
  6.  Harmony: Choose plants and design elements that suit the style of your home. It helps to determine the theme or feel of the finished product, then work to have the design be aesthetically and functionally placed.
  7. Focal point:  For your landscape design to fully work, be sure to have a focal point. It might be a gazebo, a water feature, a large flowerbed or any other element but having a focal point helps set the theme.
  8. Simplicity: A busy landscape with numerous features is not only difficult to keep maintained, but it can be difficult to focus on or be able to relax in. By keeping the landscape simple it is easier to find pleasure and relaxation when outside. Designing a landscape that makes you happy without adding a long list of items to the To Do is important.
